Today a customer needs to buy a concentrated sulfuric acid valve control system, and he provided the following information:
Medium: concentrated sulfuric acid
Flow rate: 100kg/h
Pipe diameter: DN32
Pressure: 0.4Mpa
Temperature: room temperature
A flow meter + proportional valve is required to stably control the instantaneous flow rate, and the flow range is adjustable
Material: Hastelloy is recommended, and SS316 can also be recommended for proportional valves without Hastelloy C

Coriolis flowmeter + proportional valve can be made into a sulfuric acid valve control system, and the split design is better. The following is a specific analysis:
1. Feasibility of Coriolis flowmeter + proportional valve
Technical adaptability
Coriolis flowmeter: It can directly measure the mass flow of concentrated sulfuric acid with high accuracy (±0.1%-0.5%), and is not affected by temperature, pressure, and density changes, and is suitable for corrosive media. If the lining material is Hastelloy or PTFE, it can withstand corrosion from concentrated sulfuric acid.
Proportional valve: It is necessary to select a material that is resistant to corrosion from concentrated sulfuric acid (Hastelloy is preferred, and SS316 needs to verify corrosion resistance), and has fast response and stable control capabilities. At room temperature and 0.4MPa pressure, the performance of the Hastelloy proportional valve is reliable, and the SS316 needs to confirm whether the flow rate exceeds 3m/s (exceeding will cause oxide film erosion and increase the risk of corrosion).
System integration: Coriolis flowmeters and proportional valves can achieve closed-loop control through PLC or DCS, but additional controllers, signal conversion modules (such as 4-20mA to pulse) and explosion-proof designs are required (if required on site).
Integrated vs split type
Integrated type: compact structure, easy installation, but the whole needs to be disassembled for maintenance, and the concentrated sulfuric acid system has high requirements for sealing and material reliability, and the risk of single-point failure is relatively high.
Split type: The flowmeter and valve are installed independently, which is convenient for separate maintenance and replacement, and can isolate the erosion of precision components by high temperature and corrosive gases, extending the service life of core components.
Recommendation: Split design, because the concentrated sulfuric acid system has high requirements for safety and maintenance convenience, the split design can reduce risks.
Potential problems
Cost: The Coriolis flowmeter is expensive and needs to be equipped with a high-precision proportional valve. The overall solution cost may exceed the budget.
Response speed: If the proportional valve does not respond dynamically enough, it may cause flow fluctuations, which needs to be solved by optimizing PID parameters or selecting high-performance valves.
Two-phase fluid measurement: If the concentrated sulfuric acid contains bubbles or impurities, it may affect the accuracy of the Coriolis flowmeter, and a filter or degassing device needs to be added.

Economic efficiency: The price of the fluorine-lined control valve is significantly lower than the Coriolis + proportional valve solution, and it is easy to maintain.
Applicability: At room temperature and 0.4MPa pressure, the performance of F46 lining is stable, and no additional cooling or pressurizing equipment is required.
Components to be supplemented
Flowmeter: A corrosion-resistant flowmeter (such as a turbine flowmeter or an electromagnetic flowmeter) must be configured separately
All-PTFE turbine flowmeter: Accuracy ±0.5%, resistant to concentrated sulfuric acid
Electromagnetic flowmeter: No moving parts, high reliability, but the lining material (such as PTFE) needs to be verified.
Controller: If the customer does not have an existing DCS system, a simple PID controller needs to be configured
